Janine Gray

Artist Janine Gray who resides in Ceduna, South Australia was born at Koonibba, South Australia.

Her artistic talent began from her high school years which lead her to produce amazing artwork pieces to this day.

Many of her paintings relate to what she has visualised from her cultural journey, which has allowed her to form a range of amazing artwork pieces into traditional dots and stories.

Her paint colours used, relate to the natural beauty of the earth.

Janine has exhibited her work through Ceduna Aboriginal Arts and Culture Centre in the “Our Mob” Exhibition at Adelaide Festival Centre, Red Poles at McLaren Vale in South Australia.

In early 2017 on a trip to Ceduna Vattessa visited Scotdesco, Aboriginal community on South Australia’s West Coast. Vattessa viewed the gallery and a art piece done by Janine captured Vattessa’s interest. Janine was asked if she would like to do a art piece for Desert Gem collection“Nyuwaari” for Kalgoorlie Fashion Week 2017. Janine accepted and was supported by Serena Gunter and Melanie Sarantou from Arts Ceduna, the Premier Aboriginal Art Centre on the Eyre Peninsula – South Australia Arts Ceduna. Both Serena and Melanie assisted Janine throughout the silk painting technique, ending with a beautiful emu feather piece.

Desert Gem entered their collection “Nyuwaari”  which comes from the Wangkatja language meaning glamour, pretty, vivacious.

Beryl Hocke

Artist / Textile Artist

Berly Hocke of Hocke Designs is a Torres Strait Islanders artist/textile artist who resides in Cairns, Queensland.

In 2012 Vattessa Colbung and Beryl connected, they yarned about many areas relating to fabric colour dyeing techniques. Vattessa agreed to use colours that reflected her cultural background and life journey.

Beryl is a achiever and has many talents, she has a degree in nursing. She is  a qualified nurse and received a certificate IV in Training & Assessment and is  also studying Certificate IV in Design.

She is the creator of many amazing contemporary artwork pieces. Her artwork is placed onto various fabrics and products, which are handmade. These include bags, hats, patchwork quilts and sarongs. She started her creative talent as a hobby and continues this hobby as a enjoyment.

Tahlia Lynch

Artist / Illustrator

Tahlia Lynch is a versatile young Aboriginal Artist who resides in Kalgoorlie – Boulder where her family has lived for generations. She currently resides in Perth, Western Australia. 

In 2009 – 2010 she completed a Certificate III Printing and Graphic Arts, graphic Design and Production and further studied in Certificate IV Printing and Graphics(Multimedia).

She has a range of artistic skills from concept art through to digital Illustrations. “I don’t stick to one art style as I find it more fun being able to create worlds with characters, creatures and people”.

 In 2016 Tahlia won the Kalgoorlie Art Prize, she was given a Highly Commended Award for her acrylic painting piece of her grandfather, Elder Brian Champion. 

Tahlia is an amazing artist to work with, she produces amazing sketches and graphics. When Vattessa and Tahlia discussed William Wijity’s character, she immediately knew how to bring William Wijity to life. William Wijity’s book showcases the beauty and bold colours of the Goldfields region and Australian outback.
